A NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ON WPI ACTIVITIES
Hello I am in Vietnam this week working on different issues. I hope to
engage the government of Vietnam in a series of world peace activities and
when I return home to Portland will fly to San Francisco to continue the
dialogue with the Vietnamese Consul General who was kind enough to give me
a visa, 10 minutes till 5pm on a Friday, even waiving the requirement to
have two pictures in hand.
I want you to know of a new initiative will be spending a lot of time on
in 2009 and the later part of this year:
1. We are initiating the building of Nobel Peace Laureate peace schools in
Afghanistan, India, North Korea, Uganda, and Vietnam. The schools will
serve as an antidote to the "child soldier movement" in the world today, a
horrible phenomenon as well as an antidote to the Taliban resinous schools
who teach the young and students hate, violence, and suicide bombing. We
feel the need for these peace schools are an educational movement that
must take place in the 21st century. One can logically draw the
conclusion that the educational system of the 20th century has failed
civilization in many ways. Mostly because it has not included the
teaching of basic moral values and training in basic spiritual values (not
religious values) such as forgiveness (no relationship can survive without
this value); compassion (His Holiness the Dalai Lama says this is what we
all are at our core; so education must nurture the inner self to bring
this out); reconciliation (we must teach children to reconcile conflict to
that they grow to be adults with these skills); self-sacrifice (there is
no getting around this value and in today's world of comfort, this value
is often ignored but Gandhi said "if you want to make great progress; do
not give speeches but be prepared for great suffering"; he proved this
point to the world); finally hope, we give wings to our hope and these
schools must be the wings to a new century.
2. We intend to bring together a Peace Tour of celebrities in 2009 to
visit Afghanistan, India, North Korea, Uganda and Vietnam. The Institute
is working on which celebrities now and the Tour will fundraise and build
peace schools in these five countries to begin with.
3. A Nobel Peace Laureate conference in Jerusalem which would bring
(invited) Shimon Peres, Betty Williams, Kim Dae Jung, and His Holiness the
Dalai Lama for a two day conference to apply President Kim's Sunshine
Policy to the Israeli Palestinian Conflict.
Please come to our September 5 & 6th events, see below, we need your
support and love for this work.
