WPI-Ackerman Middle School 2011 Student Peace Summit

  • 8 am to 11:15-11:30 pm; Ackerman Middle School; Canby, Oregon; 2011 WPI/Concordia University Student Peace Summit Hosted By The Ackerman Peace Club (Student Peace Advocates)
    • Ackerman Greeting; Discussion with Jody and Education dignitaries and students; Ackerman Peace Garden; Address to Ackerman students and other Peace Clubs.
    • Potential panel Discussion by WPI/Concordia Education Department on “The importance of teaching about Nobel Peace Laureates and peace and conflict resolution in the K-12 school system”. The Peace Forum will feature the 1997 Nobel Peace Laureate Jody Williams in a Ackerman faculty and student  The Forum will help to outline a plan for teaching about this work of the Nobel Peace Laureates in the Oregon school system, as well as around conflict resolution and world peace issues such as land mines and cluster bombs. This panel will also help empower the WPI/Concordia Education Department PEACE (Peace Education and Curriculum Exchange) Program; which Ackerman is a part of. Ackerman, WPI and Concordia Education will record this and post it on the internet and will publish a paper on the new ideas.
    • Other Peace Schools/Peace clubs to be invited: Baha’i Junior Youth (JYSEP); De LaSalle Catholic school-St Andrew’s Church Children’s Peace Fair; Fr. Bernard Youth Center; Peace Village School; Rotary International District 5100 Youth Exchange students; Youth for Human Rights students-Delphian School; Skyview Diversity Committee; Portland International Community School; West Linn High School Peace Club; Mercy Corps Education Staff and some students; Concordia Education Department faculty and some students; ODE staff; some WPI funders.
    • Lunch with Jody at Ackerman High School

WPI 2011 Summer Peace Institute; 7th Annual Nobel Peace Laureate Conference; NEW IDEAS FOR ELIMINATING WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION

  • 12:30 pm to 1:50 pm; Concordia University; Fellowship Hall; St. Michael’s Church; Panel with Jody Williams and Concordia Faculty & Students. Dick Hill, Joe Mannion, Gary Spanovich, Jim Pressnell to plan the theme.  Jim Pressnell to open and close the panel with a prayer. Gary Spanovich to introduce Jody Williams and the purpose of the 7th Summer Peace Institute and to moderate the panel.
  • 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm: Concordia University; Either in the Fellowship Hall or the sanctuary of St. Michael’s Church
  • 2:00 pm: Opening Statement of a Wholistic Approach to world peace; Address By Jody Williams
  • 2:15 pm to 3:00 pm: Panel One: New ideas to eliminate weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East; May, 2012 Jerusalem Nobel Peace Conference; May, 2012 WPI Peace Tour to Israel/Palestine
  • 3:00 pm to 3:45 pm: Panel Two: New ideas to eliminate weapons of mass destruction on the Korean Peninsula; September, 2012 WPI/PUST Nobel Peace Laureate Conference, Pyongyang, North Korea; September, 2012 WPI Peace Tour to North Korea
  • 4 pm: End of Summer Peace Institute

Dinner Hosted By Concordia for Their Board and funders; WPI Board and funders also invited

  • 5 pm to 6:30 pm: Dinner at Concordia; Brandeis Room: for WPI and Concordia Donors; Board of Trustees; Jody will give a short speech and take a few questions; there will be time for photographs. WPI can encourage all attendees to join the WPI as members to support our Nobel Peace Laureate work. The dinner is planned for 30 people on the campus.
  • 7 pm to 8:30-9:00 pm: Nobel Peace Laureate Lecture at Concordia University; SEAC; Jody will deliver a lecture on “Eliminating Weapons of Mass Destruction” and take questions. There will be a time for her to autograph books. Also the Harold Schnitzer Spirit of Unity Award winners will be acknowledged during this time; if possible.  Concordia can take the lead on introductions and such with this event.

Friday; April 15, 2011

  • 10 am: Rotary/WPI Brunch, Hilton Hotel: Brunch to be hosted potentially by Al Jubitz/Mike Caruso for Rotarians to meet Jody and to discuss the Rotary District 5100 Rotary Peace Fair in June, 2012 which will bring a number of Nobel Peace Laureates to Portland. Also to discuss beginning new programs for Rotary International in the area of peace making and conflict resolution (new areas of service recently adopted by Rotary International.
  • Noon to 1:30 pm: April WPI Peace Lunch; Mercy Corps Building: Jody will give a talk in their big room (theatre style-no lunch provided that day-brown bag okay); Jody will give a talk about her work to unite diverse peace groups into one mission and her work on having land mines banned in the world. There will be a charge of $5 for this.
  • Afternoon; 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm: Rest for Jody
  • 5:15p : Oregon Zoo reception Jody will attend a private reception for table sponsors
  • 6:00pm: Oregon Zoo Dinner ($75); Jody will give a speech
