Student Peace Leadership

student
Our Institute cares about students. Our Institute brings Nobel Peace Laureates together with middle, high school and university students to inspire, educate and transform their formative educational experience. We have curriculum that demonstrates the accomplishments of these profoundly influential peace-makers of our history and our current world. The students are given many opportunities to study about, develop projects for humanitarian service, non-violently demonstrating for human and civil rights, taking specific action to support and engage others within their communities to practice peace and to teach peaceful means of conflict resolution whether it be through peer mediation, performing Acts of kindness or mindfulness meditation and music. The Educating for Peace Student Leadership Program involves engaging students to apply for the Harold Schnitzer Spirit of Unity grant and to start their own school-based peace project or club; we have stimulated the beginning of more than 70 clubs in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Basing the foundation of 15 years of work with students and world peace-leaders, the Institute’s goal is to establish a National Student Peace Society, originating in Oregon and modeled after the National Honor Society that allows every student and opportunity to be acknowledged for their exemplary moral courage and actions toward achieving a more peaceful world.

Our Educating for Peace program began in 2001 with the 10,000 student Dalai lama Youth Summit and we have been working in the schools since then. Each year the Spirit of Unity Award  which originated with Harold Schnitzer, one of Oregon’s foremost humanitarians, is given to Elementary, Middle & High School Peace, Human Rights, Conflict Resolution Clubs at Oregon schools and community colleges for the outstanding work of their students in initiating peace and service projects in their schools and their communities-to make our world both a safer and a better place for all.  All students who apply to the Wholistic Peace Institute and are selected to receive this award are invited to attend a ceremony where they have an opportunity to present their peace project idea and to receive their school’s prize and certificate from a Nobel Peace Laureate winner. Sixty schools have received this prize and currently continue their activities to cultivate a culture of peace because of WPI’s work with the Spirit of Unity program.

Educating for Peace, the Wholistic Peace Institute and the Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation are pleased to announce the winners of the 2016 Harold Schnitzer Spirit of Unity Awards for the Student Peace Leadership and Education Grants.  This is the 9th year that we have offered this to qualified applicants within the Oregon K-12 community of schools.

This year, Educating for Peace offered discounted tickets to Spirit of Unity applicants so they could see the 2014 Nobel Peace Prizewinner, Malala Yousafzai from Pakistan who after suffering a near fatal shooting by extremist rebels on a school bus in her own country, she has survived to be a spokesperson for rights for all children to get an education and for the value particularly of education to lift young women so they have the option to be educated in the free world.
The award ceremony will take place in November and be hosted by one of this year’s award recipients, Baker Prairie Middle School in Canby Oregon.  The grant recipients will be notified by email as to logistics for this annual event.
